Planning Local Read Aloud Activities

  • Contact the RAV member affiliates in your community - The public library, the PTA, the Virginia Educational Media Association, the Virginia State Reading Association, the Virginia Academy of School Psychologists, the Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatricians.

  • Host a planning meeting to talk about ideas, and special groups that you might want to reach (e. g., Parents in literacy programs, social services clients,  families with students reading below grade level).

  • Work with youth services librarians from the public libraries and schools, to plan programs that will reach parents and caregivers and assist them in reading aloud to their children.

  • Consider applying for an LSTA Read Aloud Grant through the Library of Virginia--available for joint school and public library projects.

  • Create displays of read aloud books and other reading materials, for a reading rich environment.

  • Create a read aloud resource center by purchasing materials from the resource list.

  • Encourage your school to become a RAV partner by following the tips in the school partner section, and setting a read aloud goal for your school.

  • Encourage corporations and businesses to partner with you, and recognize employees who commit to reading aloud.

  • Use national literary events to promote reading aloud, such as National Children's Book Week and Dr. Seuss' Read Across America on March 2.  Consider inviting celebrity readers from your community  (the Police Chief, the Mayor, the high school football star).
